Things are hotting up in the AI race… The UK government will invest £100 million to establish a foothold in the global AI chip race, using taxpayer money to procure components from major chipmakers like Nvidia, AMD, and Intel.
The move aims to bolster the UK's AI capabilities and compete with the US, EU, and China, but industry insiders express concerns about the relatively low investment compared to peers. The UK accounts for just 0.5% of global semiconductor sales, prompting fears of lagging progress in the rapidly evolving AI chip industry amidst geopolitical tensions. The UK is also planning an AI summit and seeks to play a bridging role between the US and China.

in the US a judge upheld the U.S. Copyright Office's decision that AI-generated art lacks copyright protection due to the absence of human authorship.
Stephen Thaler, CEO of Imagination Engines, challenged this stance after his AI-created artwork was denied protection. The judge emphasised that copyright law centres on human creativity and purposefully excludes non-human creation. The ruling comes amid debates over AI system training on copyrighted content and highlights the requirement for human involvement in copyrightable works.

OpenAI, known for ChatGPT, acquires Global Illumination, a startup using AI for creative tools. First public acquisition after 7 years and the terms undisclosed.
Global Illumination's team are famous for building gaming and social products. This acquisition points toward Open AI’s plans to create consumer facing products and not just be for business use.
